Steps
Go to asc.gov and open the National Registry / Appraiser Registry search tool.
Search by the appraiser's first and last name, or by their state credential number, and optionally filter by state/territory and credential type.
Open the matching profile to view credential number, credentialing state, effective and expiration dates, and any active disciplinary actions.
Cross-check the state shown against the state where the appraisal work is being performed, since credentials are state-specific.
If no match is found for a recently issued or renewed credential, confirm directly with the state board rather than concluding the license is invalid.
Known gotchas
Registry updates from states nightly, but new or changed credentials can take roughly 30-35 days to appear — don't treat absence as proof of no license.
A credential number match without a matching state doesn't confirm authority to appraise in the property's state.
