Steps
Go to the FRA Developer Support Site (safetydata.fra.dot.gov/MasterWebService/publicapi) and review the Quick Start Guide.
Register for API access to be assigned an access token.
Insert the assigned token into requests to the Master Web Service for reportable rail equipment accident data or Form 57 highway-rail grade crossing accident/incident data.
For bulk/tabular access, use the DataDownloadService web service methods (e.g., GetAccident54DataByRailroad).
For a metadata-driven REST/OData approach, request the OData metadata document at the GCIS v1 odata $metadata path before building queries.
Known gotchas
The site distinguishes "Public" from "Secure" API areas - confirm which registration/token path a given endpoint actually requires before assuming it's open.
Data reflects only FRA-reportable thresholds; incidents below the reporting threshold won't appear.
