Steps
Register for the DAT Developer Portal at developer.dat.com and confirm your organization has a RateView Combo Pro or Combo Premium subscription (required for REST API rate access)
Ask DAT to provision a service account (a dedicated non-'+' email) for organization-level authentication, separate from individual user logins
Assign the requesting user a Connexion seat plus a RateView seat, since rate requests are gated on service-level entitlements, not just the service account
Authenticate with the service account credentials to get an organization token, then authenticate the individual user to get a user-level token
Call the RateView rate-lookup endpoint with origin/destination market areas and equipment type to get average buy/sell rates, contributor count, and quartile distribution
Cache responses briefly since RateView is metered per subscription tier and repeated identical lane queries burn quota unnecessarily
Known gotchas
Load Board subscriptions alone do not unlock rate data - RateView Combo Pro/Premium is a separate, required entitlement for REST rate calls
Two-tier auth (service account + user) trips up integrators who only implement single-token OAuth; both levels must succeed
Production API access carries a separate setup step/fee beyond the free developer portal signup - confirm commercial terms before building against it
