Steps
Confirm scope: NY DOS licenses 'Security or Fire Alarm Installer' for businesses/individuals that install, service, or maintain security or fire alarm systems.
Complete required education — four 15-hour modules plus one 21-hour module (81 hours total) of DOS-approved coursework — unless exempt.
Provide electronic fingerprinting through a DOS-approved vendor (applicant must be at least 18).
Pass the state exam if not exempt — it is open-book, multiple choice, and based on NFPA standards and the NY State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code.
Note licensed Master Electricians may obtain the Fire Alarm license via a waiver route by submitting proof of licensure and the jurisdictions where held. License term is two years; confirm current fees on dos.ny.gov before applying.
Known gotchas
New York City imposes its own additional licensing overlay on top of the state DOS license — confirm NYC-specific requirements separately if operating in the five boroughs.
The Master Electrician waiver route still requires fingerprinting and does not exempt an applicant from the background check.
