Steps
Confirm which eligibility category applies: an approved course of at least 140 hours (including at least 40 unpaid supervised field hours), or a set minimum number of supervised inspections performed under a licensed inspector, PE, or architect
Pass either the New York State Home Inspector License Examination or the National Home Inspector Examination (both accepted since a 2020 legislative change)
Obtain general liability insurance as required by law
Submit the application with the initial license fee to the NY Department of State
Track the continuing education requirement each 2-year renewal cycle
