Steps

  1. Confirm which edition of NFPA 70 (NEC) the local AHJ has actually adopted — jurisdictions commonly lag the newest NFPA cycle by one or more editions, and Article 600 subsection numbering has been stable but should be checked against the adopted edition
  2. Per NEC 600.6, provide an externally operable disconnect for each circuit supplying the sign or outline lighting system, located at the point the feeder/branch circuit enters the sign enclosure or pole, and within sight of the sign; if it cannot be within sight of an energized section, it must be lockable per 600.6/110.25
  3. Per NEC 600.5(A), supply the sign or outline lighting outlet from a branch circuit rated at least 20A that serves no other loads; multiple signs may share one such circuit as long as the combined connected load stays within the circuit rating
  4. Verify ground-fault protection requirements for the specific sign location (e.g., accessible/outdoor sign circuits) and check for any exception where feeder/branch conductors merely pass through the sign in listed raceway without supplying it
  5. Have the electrical inspector confirm any local amendments to Article 600 before energizing, since some jurisdictions add stricter disconnect-location or lockout rules
