Steps

  1. Register for a free AirNow API account via the login/signup flow at docs.airnowapi.org.
  2. Use the 'Current Observations' web service (by Reporting Area, or by Zip Code/Lat-Long) to pull current AQI values and categories.
  3. Parse the returned AQI category (Good/Moderate/USG/Unhealthy/etc.) to assess whether burning is advisable.
  4. For repeated queries, prefer reporting-area-code based calls over the older zip/lat-long-specific variants slated for retirement.
