Register for a free API key at docs.airnowapi.org, then call the 'Current Observations by Reporting Area' web service (by reporting-area code) for outdoor PM2.5/ozone AQI as baseline context.
For historical baselines, prefer the 'Historical Observations by Reporting Area, By State' service.
For an area rather than a single point, use the geographic bounding-box 'Observations by Monitoring Site' services (hourly or daily).
For forward-looking context, use the 'Current Forecasts by Reporting Area, Lat/Long, or Zip Code' service alongside your indoor trend data.
Check docs.airnowapi.org/webservices directly before building new integrations, since it is the canonical, currently-maintained list of which services are current vs. sunsetting.
Known gotchas
Per AirNow's own documentation (docs.airnowapi.org/webservices), the by-Zip-Code and by-Latitude/Longitude variants of the Forecasts, Current Observations, and Historical Observations services are explicitly listed as 'Web Services that will be retired in the fall of 2026' — prefer the reporting-area-code or bounding-box services for new integrations.
AirNow reports outdoor ambient air quality only; it is not a substitute for indoor radon or CO2 measurement, just contextual outdoor baseline (e.g., wildfire smoke infiltration days).
