Steps
Register for an AirNow API account at docs.airnowapi.org and obtain an API_KEY
For a current forecast, call the Current Forecast web service (by reporting area, zip code, or lat/long) passing your API_KEY
For a forecast on a specific past date, call the Historical Forecast service with a date parameter and your API_KEY
For historical AQI observations, use the Historical Observations by Reporting Area (by state) service
Request format=application/json (csv and xml are also supported) via a direct GET URL or the AirNow Query Tool
Plan to migrate off the legacy zip-code- and lat/long-specific forecast and historical services, which AirNow's docs list as scheduled for retirement
Known gotchas
AirNow's docs explicitly flag the older zip-code-specific and lat/long-specific forecast, current-observation, and historical services as being retired; don't build new integrations on them
Forecasts are issued once per day, so forecast data does not update intra-day
The current (non-deprecated) historical-observations service supports querying by state, not directly by zip code or lat/long
