Steps
Confirm the applicable trigger height for scaffolds is more than 10 feet above a lower level (1926.451(g)), which differs from the general construction fall-protection trigger used elsewhere in Subpart M.
Select either a guardrail system or a personal fall arrest system based on scaffold type and site conditions.
If using guardrails, install toprails in the applicable height range for the scaffold type and era (confirm the specific range for the configuration in question) with a midrail.
If using a PFAS, anchor to a point/lifeline the competent person designates, rated for at least 5,000 lb per attached employee -- never to the guardrail or cross-bracing.
