Calculate the maximum intended load (all workers, tools, materials, and transmitted loads reasonably expected on the scaffold at once) per the 1926.450 definition.
Confirm each scaffold component (planks, poles, braces, couplers) -- not just the overall structure -- is rated to support its own weight plus at least 4 times the maximum intended load transmitted to it (1926.451(a)(1)).
For non-adjustable suspension scaffold ropes, confirm at least a 6:1 safety factor.
For direct roof/floor connections and counterweights on adjustable suspension scaffolds, confirm resistance to at least 4 times the tipping moment at rated hoist load, or 1.5 times at stall load, whichever is greater.
Never exceed the manufacturer's or engineer's rated capacity, and communicate the safe working load to crews.
