Steps
Register with VesselFinder to obtain an API userkey and select a subscription plan for the endpoint(s) needed (single-vessel lookup, fixed fleet list, or custom-area live data).
Call the vessel lookup method with your userkey plus a list of IMO and/or MMSI numbers to get current AIS/voyage/master data.
For a fixed fleet, use the fleet-list endpoint, which returns positions for a predefined vessel list at your subscription's refresh interval.
For an area of interest instead of specific vessels, use the custom-area live-data endpoint with a bounding box.
Parse the JSON/XML response for AIS fields (lat/lon, course, speed, draught, destination, ETA) plus optional voyage/master datasets if subscribed.
Known gotchas
Different endpoints (single lookup vs fleet list vs custom-area) are separate products with different pricing/refresh cadence - pick the one matching your query pattern.
Data is largely terrestrial-AIS sourced - vessels outside coastal receiver range may not appear or may be stale.
Response format (JSON vs XML) must be requested explicitly; don't assume a default.
