Steps
Inspect the EPSS and its components (genset, transfer switch, fuel system, batteries) weekly per NFPA 110 Chapter 8.
Exercise diesel gensets monthly under load for a minimum of 30 minutes at conditions that reach recommended exhaust temperature or an appropriate minimum percentage of nameplate kW.
Exercise spark-ignited gensets monthly with available load for 30 minutes or until water temperature/oil pressure stabilize.
Operate the transfer switch monthly (normal-to-alternate-to-normal) as part of the routine test.
Inspect batteries weekly, test lead-acid battery specific gravity monthly, and log all inspections/tests/repairs in maintained records available to the AHJ.
Known gotchas
A monthly exercise that never reaches the required load/temperature threshold doesn't satisfy the intent of the test and can mask a wet-stacking or under-loading problem — verify actual load reached, not just 'it started.'
Skipped or undocumented weekly/monthly checks are a common finding in insurance and AHJ audits; the paperwork trail is treated as evidence of compliance, not just good practice.
