Steps
Create or update the base item record (SKU, description, pricing, category)
Create an ItemMatrix to group variant items that share attributes such as size and color
Set the matrix's attribute value lists to enumerate the variant options, using up to three attribute sets
Create individual item records for each variant, linking each to the parent ItemMatrix
Manage quantity and pricing on the individual variant items rather than at the matrix level
Archive the ItemMatrix, rather than deleting it, when a product line is discontinued
Known gotchas
Matrix attribute sets are capped at three attributes total, so a fourth axis (e.g., frame size, color, and wheel size together) won't fit in one matrix
Inventory counts and pricing live on the child item, not the parent ItemMatrix — updating the matrix alone won't adjust stock
Bulk matrix import file formatting differs from the live API payload shape — don't reuse import templates as API request bodies
