Steps

  1. Register with the Maryland Department of Agriculture at least 1 month before a scheduled exam date.
  2. Study the Professional Lawn Care Manual (soils/fertility, soil testing, label interpretation, equipment calibration, UMD fertilizer recommendations).
  3. Pass the written certification exam given by MDA (offered at least annually) and pay the $100 certification fee.
  4. Renew annually (certificate runs Jan 1–Dec 31 of issuance) by completing 2 hours of MDA-approved continuing education, or by reexamination ($10 fee).
  5. Apply MDA turfgrass fertilizer application rate/timing rules on every job, since the underlying 2011 law restricts nitrogen/phosphorus application specifically to protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
