Search EPA ECHO for wastewater/stormwater facilities under NPDES permits and retrieve compliance history

Steps
Call the CWA getfacilities endpoint with search parameters (state, county, permit type, facility name) and output=JSON to validate the query and obtain a QID
Use get_qid with the returned QID to page through facility results
Use getfacilityinfo directly for pre-aggregated cluster or facility-level summaries without the QID workflow
Use qcolumns to request specific fields such as NPDES permit ID, inspection count, or current compliance status
Use get_download with the QID to export the full result set as CSV for offline analysis
Known gotchas
QIDs expire after about 30 minutes, so the getfacilities -> get_qid -> get_download sequence must complete within that window
Data is drawn from ICIS-NPDES state-reported submissions, which can have significant reporting lag versus real-time compliance
Results mix major and minor NPDES permittees; filter explicitly on permit type if only major dischargers are wanted
