Steps
Use ASTM D4417 (current edition D4417-21) to choose a surface profile measurement method appropriate to the job
Apply Method A (visual comparator) for quick qualitative field comparison against reference standards
Apply Method B (depth micrometer/profile gauge) for direct peak-to-valley height measurement, primarily on flat surfaces
Apply Method C (replica tape) when a retainable physical record is needed or surface geometry prevents gauge access
Record the method used alongside results, since the governing coating specification may mandate a specific D4417 method
Known gotchas
Method B was developed for flat surfaces — using it on curved or irregular geometry can give unreliable readings; replica tape (Method C) is often better there
Do not substitute one method for another without checking whether the coating spec names a required D4417 method
