Steps
Confirm which ASTM D4417 method the project spec calls out: Method A (visual comparator), Method B (depth micrometer with pointed probe), or Method C (replica tape read with a spring-loaded micrometer)
Pull the current edition from store.astm.org (D4417-19/-21 lineage) and check for an active reissue before citing a year in a QC report
For Method C, burnish replica tape per the standard's specified pressure/technique, then subtract the 2-mil Mylar backing thickness from the raw micrometer reading
Take the number of readings per area specified by the governing coating spec (D4417 itself does not fix a sampling frequency — that comes from the project spec or SSPC-PA 2-style area/spot logic)
Record peak count and average profile depth in mils/µm and retain replica tape samples as QC records if the contract requires them
Known gotchas
Method B and Method C do not always agree on the same surface — do not average results from two methods run on the same panel as if they were one dataset
D4417 has no built-in acceptance criteria; profile depth ranges (e.g., 1.5–3.5 mils) come from the coating manufacturer's data sheet or the project spec, not the ASTM standard itself
