Steps
Use NABCEP's official Professional Directory at directories.nabcep.org to search by the individual's name or certification number rather than trusting a claimed credential
For PV installation professionals specifically, cross-check using NABCEP's installer locator (nabcep.org/installer-locator), which also supports ZIP-code search for finding certified installers
Confirm three things in the directory result: the certification number matches, the certification type matches what's claimed (e.g., PV Installation Professional vs. Associate-level credential), and the certification has not expired
For Associate-level (entry) credentials, use NABCEP's Associate Directory specifically, since Associate and full Board Certifications are tracked and displayed differently
Re-verify periodically for ongoing subcontractors, since NABCEP certifications require continuing education and can lapse
Known gotchas
A verbally-claimed NABCEP certification should always be checked against the live directory — certification numbers and expiration dates are the authoritative source, not a resume or business card
