Install the Respondus LockDown Browser LTI integration in Canvas via the External App configuration; use the LTI credentials provided by Respondus for your institution's license
Enable LockDown Browser on a specific Canvas quiz by opening the Respondus dashboard from within the quiz settings; toggle the LockDown Browser requirement and optionally enable Respondus Monitor for webcam proctoring
Configure Monitor settings including startup sequence requirements (environment check, ID verification, facial detection) and the level of automated review flags (eye movement, audio events, multiple faces)
Instruct students to download and install the LockDown Browser client before the exam; the browser enforces OS-level restrictions preventing screen sharing, browser switching, and copy-paste during the session
After the exam, access the Respondus dashboard in Canvas to review Monitor session recordings and automated flag reports; manually review flagged sessions before releasing grades
Known gotchas
Respondus LockDown Browser does not expose a public REST API for third-party integration; institutions cannot programmatically create or configure exam sessions — all configuration must go through the LMS-embedded Respondus dashboard UI or supported LMS plugin
LockDown Browser is only available as a downloadable desktop application for Windows and macOS; students on Chromebooks or mobile devices cannot use it, requiring an alternative proctoring solution or in-person option
Monitor's automated flagging generates false positives (e.g., head turns flagged as suspicious); instructors must treat automated flags as requiring human review rather than as definitive evidence of academic dishonesty
