Steps

1. Determine the correct UL 325 usage class for the installation: Class I (residential, one to four single families), Class II (commercial, e.g. multi-family with five or more units, hotels, retail, public-access buildings), Class III (industrial/limited access, not intended to service the general public), or Class IV (restricted-access guarded industrial, e.g. airport security areas with security-personnel supervision).
2. Confirm the gate operator itself is UL 325 listed for the class matching the installation, not just listed in general.
3. Identify each potential entrapment zone created by the gate's motion, in each direction of travel, and confirm at least two independent entrapment-protection means are provided per zone as required by the standard.
4. Verify photo-eye and/or contact-edge sensor devices are installed and wired per the operator manufacturer's UL-listed installation instructions rather than a generic aftermarket substitution.
5. Test entrapment-protection function (reversal on obstruction) at commissioning and document the test before turning the gate over to the owner.
