Steps
Access the PSIXData.asmx endpoint at cgmix.uscg.mil/xml/PSIXData.asmx (a .NET ASMX web service callable via SOAP-style requests)
Query by vessel name, Hull Identification Number, or Official Number
Parse the returned dataset for vessel name, official number, HIN, flag, and documentation status
Check the data's currency, since PSIX is a weekly FOIA snapshot of the MISLE database, not real-time
Fall back to the PSIX web search UI or XLSX export if the web service is unavailable
Known gotchas
This is a US federal government (USCG) data source - official/regulated, but explicitly a weekly FOIA snapshot, so very recent documentation changes won't show yet
The service is an ASMX endpoint (older .NET web service), not a modern JSON REST API - plan for SOAP/XML handling
Personal/private owner information is redacted under the Privacy Act and applicable FOIA exemptions
