Steps
Register your company on the INTTRA platform and configure trading partner relationships with the ocean carriers you ship with
Create a booking request using the INTTRA Booking API or EDI BKCBKG message, specifying origin and destination ports, vessel/voyage (if known), container type and quantity, commodity, and Incoterms
Submit the booking and receive the carrier's booking confirmation number (a unique reference linking all subsequent documents to this booking)
Transmit the Shipping Instructions (SI) via INTTRA to provide the draft bill of lading data: shipper, consignee, notify party, cargo description, and marks and numbers
Receive the draft B/L for review, submit corrections if needed, and instruct release of the original or seaway bill as appropriate
Known gotchas
INTTRA booking confirmations are carrier commitments to space, not rate confirmations; always have a separate signed freight contract or rate confirmation to avoid freight disputes at time of shipment
Shipping Instructions cutoff deadlines are enforced strictly by carriers; late SI submission results in either a late B/L issuance fee or exclusion from the vessel
Original B/L release requires surrender of all three originals (or all copies of the negotiable set); releasing cargo without full surrender creates title and financial risk
