Steps
Request Asset Tracking API access through public.railinc.com/developers/get-started.
Get provisioned with RailSight credentials tied to your Railinc customer account.
Call the Last Event request for a single railcar's most recent reported event, or Event History for events between two dates.
Use Active Trip or Active Trip Trace to retrieve events, waybill data, and trip plan ETA for the car's current move.
Use Trace History for a full history combining events, waybill data, and ETA over a date range, returned in JSON.
Known gotchas
RailSight covers 560+ carriers, but event timing/detail still depends on each carrier's own reporting into the network - not all data points exist for every railroad.
Queries are billable per event/request per Railinc's price list; check the current published price list before high-volume polling.
