Steps
Determine who the customer or governing code requires to make the certification decision: SNT-TC-1A is an employer-based recommended practice where the employer's own written practice qualifies and certifies NDT personnel
Determine if the contract instead requires central, third-party certification, in which case ASNT's ACCP program or an ISO 9712-accredited certification body issues the credential directly to the individual, independent of any single employer
Check the shop's or contractor's written practice (a mandatory internal document under either scheme) for its minimum education, training-hour, exam, and experience requirements, and confirm the technician meets them
If a technician holds an ACCP or ASNT Level II/III central certificate, confirm with the site's NDT Level III whether that credential is accepted as satisfying the employer's written practice, since acceptance is a documented determination, not automatic
Do not treat SNT-TC-1A 'certification' as portable between employers by default — under the employer-based model, certification is tied to the certifying employer's program
Known gotchas
SNT-TC-1A itself is only a recommended practice — it has no central registry of certified individuals to check online; verification means requesting the employer's written practice and the individual's internal certification records
ISO 9712 and ACCP both involve independent certification bodies with their own recertification cycles; expiration dates must be checked per body, there is no single unified lookup across schemes
