Steps
Pass InterNACHI's free Online Inspector Examination, which is open to non-members
Join InterNACHI as a paid member
Complete the Code of Ethics course and the Standards of Practice course
Submit the required number of mock/simulated inspection reports using InterNACHI's online checklist
Sign the enrollment affidavit to receive the CPI credential
Known gotchas
CPI is a membership-linked certification — it lapses if InterNACHI membership lapses, unlike a standalone state license
CPI does not replace state licensure where a state licensing program exists — the state's Standards of Practice govern legal practice, and InterNACHI's SOP is supplemental
Maintaining CPI requires re-passing the Online Inspector Examination at a minimum score every few years plus ongoing continuing education — this is separate from the initial certification steps above
