2. Verify cap shingle exposure and fastener count/placement match the manufacturer's instructions — ridge caps typically require different (often longer) fasteners than field shingles to penetrate ridge board/vent assemblies.
3. Confirm starter strip is a manufacturer-specified starter product (or factory-cut field shingles per instructions) with self-sealing adhesive positioned correctly along the eave, not just an inverted shingle course improvised on site.
4. Check that starter strip overhang at eaves and rakes matches the drip edge and gutter design (typically 1/4 to 3/4 inch overhang beyond the drip edge per manufacturer instructions) to ensure proper water shedding.
5. If a ridge vent is being installed, confirm the cap shingle system is rated/compatible with the specific vent product for the combined wind-uplift and ventilation performance the manufacturer warrants.
