Steps
Confirm the Avigilon Alta/Openpath subscription includes API access, since it is not enabled on every plan
Authenticate using one of the documented methods — login-based email/password to obtain a token, Basic Authentication, or JWT signed with a private key
Use the API reference under openpath.readme.io to locate the current entry/unlock endpoint and required organization/site identifiers
Issue the programmatic unlock request and check the response for confirmation of the entry action
Where credential provisioning rather than a one-off unlock is needed, use the programmatic credential-generation endpoints documented alongside the unlock API
Known gotchas
Three distinct auth schemes are documented (login/password token, Basic Auth, JWT with private key) — mixing them or assuming one universally works will produce inconsistent 401s across environments
The product was rebranded from Openpath to Avigilon Alta; some support and integration pages still use the old Openpath name and URLs (help.openpath.com) alongside the new Avigilon support domain, so documentation is currently split across two brand surfaces
API access requires the underlying subscription plan to include it — a standard Alta Access subscription without API entitlement will authenticate but reject calls
