Obtain and review the current FM 4991 Approval Standard, which is built on the FCIA Manual of Practice, to understand required management-system elements.
Designate at least one Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) with firestop expertise who will sit the FM firestop exam.
Build the firm's quality-management system covering submittal review, product/system selection, storage and handling, installation QA, and record-keeping consistent with the standard.
Schedule the required on-site audit with FM Approvals, during which the DRI may also sit the exam if not already passed.
After approval, track the DRI's 3-year re-examination cycle and continuing-education requirements to keep accreditation current.
Known gotchas
The DRI must score 80% or better on the FM firestop exam per FCIA's published guidance — a lower score does not qualify the firm.
The 3-year re-exam is waived only if the DRI logs the required CEUs/learning units during that period — track this proactively rather than at the deadline.
The exam and standard are both keyed to FCIA's Manual of Practice, so studying only manufacturer literature is insufficient preparation.
