Apply OSHA Hazard Communication (HazCom) and PPE requirements for techs handling pool acid and chlorine

Steps

1. Maintain a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for every chemical carried or stored, and keep it accessible to technicians (physically or electronically) at the time and place of use.
2. Keep original manufacturer labels on containers; if a chemical is transferred to a smaller working container for use beyond the same shift by the same employee, apply proper secondary-container labeling (product identity plus hazard information), since OSHA's limited portable-container exception only covers immediate use within the same shift by the same person.
3. Provide and require appropriate PPE for acid/chlorine handling — at minimum chemical splash goggles, acid-resistant gloves, and an apron — matched to what the SDS specifies for that specific product.
4. Maintain a written HazCom program covering the chemicals actually in use, and train technicians on chemical-specific hazards, including incompatibility risks, not just generic 'wear PPE' guidance.
5. Retrain or brief staff whenever a new chemical or product formulation is introduced into the company's inventory.
