Steps

  1. Use ASTM E337, 'Standard Test Method for Measuring Humidity with a Psychrometer (the Measurement of Wet- and Dry-Bulb Temperatures),' as the reference method for the wet-bulb/dry-bulb readings used to derive dew point and relative humidity, and check store.astm.org for the current edition
  2. Measure substrate surface temperature independently with a contact or infrared thermometer
  3. Apply the coating spec's or manufacturer data sheet's minimum surface-temperature-above-dew-point margin (commonly 5°F/3°C, but this figure comes from the coating spec, not from E337 itself)
  4. Recheck conditions periodically through the shift, since dew point margin can close as ambient temperature drops toward evening even if it passed at the start of work
  5. Log psychrometer readings, calculated dew point, surface temperature, and margin at each check as part of the QC daily report
