Steps
Sign in at https://aisstream.io/apikeys (e.g., via GitHub login) and generate a free API key.
Open a WebSocket connection to wss://stream.aisstream.io/v0/stream.
Within 3 seconds of connecting, send a subscription message containing the APIKey and a BoundingBoxes array covering the marina approach/anchorage area.
Optionally add FiltersShipMMSI (max 50 MMSIs) or FilterMessageTypes to narrow the stream to specific vessels or message types (e.g., PositionReport).
Consume incoming JSON messages to track vessel positions approaching the marina in near real time.
Known gotchas
aisstream.io explicitly labels the service BETA with 'no guarantees and no SLA for uptime' — do not rely on it for safety-critical harbormaster decisions without a fallback.
Coverage depends on shore-based AIS receiver density feeding the network; small/remote marinas may see sparse or delayed data.
