Steps

1. Confirm the task is mortar removal (tuckpointing) with a handheld grinder, which has its own Table 1 entry distinct from other handheld-grinder uses.
2. Equip the grinder with a shroud plus a dust collection system rated at 25 cfm or greater airflow per inch of wheel diameter, filtration of 99% or greater efficiency, and a cyclonic pre-separator or filter-cleaning mechanism.
3. Operate and maintain the tool per manufacturer instructions to minimize dust emissions, and keep the collector filter/bag serviced per that guidance.
4. Check the current Table 1 respirator requirement on osha.gov for the specific duration and location (indoor/enclosed vs. outdoor) rather than assuming no respirator is needed.
5. Where full Table 1 controls can't be implemented, use the standard's alternative exposure-assessment path (air monitoring against the 50 microgram/m3 PEL) instead of guessing at controls.
