Steps
Generate a Conversions API access token in Ads Manager (Ad Account Overview > Conversions > Conversions API > Set up API)
POST events to the send-conversions endpoint for the ad account, including event_name, action_source, event_time, and hashed user data (email, phone) plus available click IDs
Batch up to the documented per-request event limit (up to 1,000 events) rather than issuing one call per event
Reuse the same event_id across the Pinterest Tag (client-side) and the Conversions API call for the same action so Pinterest can deduplicate
Keep event lag to roughly an hour or less from when the action occurred, since Pinterest expects near-real-time delivery for optimization
Check the Conversions API diagnostics panel in Ads Manager to validate delivery and match quality
Known gotchas
Deduplication only triggers when event_id is byte-identical between the Tag and the API call — any mismatch results in double-counted conversions
Sending events with excessive lag beyond roughly an hour degrades their usefulness for campaign optimization even if Pinterest still accepts them
The access token is tied to a specific ad account and shown only once at generation — losing it means regenerating and reconfiguring rather than retrieving it again
