Note that ICPI and NCMA unified (effective July 1, 2022) and now operate as the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA) as of the February 2023 rebrand — old 'ICPI Certified Installer' references should be treated as CMHA's current program.
Choose the correct installer track: CMHA certifies installers separately in ICP (interlocking concrete pavers), SRW (segmental retaining walls), PICP (permeable interlocking pavers), or MSV (manufactured stone veneer) — the ICP course does not automatically cover SRW or PICP scope.
Complete the CMHA installer training course (in person or via CMHA's learning management system).
Pass the certification exam administered on CMHA's LMS through a verified third-party proctor (program restructured around ISO 17024 standards as of 2023).
Reference current CMHA (formerly ICPI) Tech Spec bulletins for base, bedding, and jointing-sand requirements when bidding and executing installs.
Known gotchas
Materials and marketing still labeled 'ICPI Tech Spec ##' are legacy documents now published under CMHA — don't assume the organization is defunct or the specs are outdated; verify the current document on cmha.org.
A certification in one installer track (e.g., ICP) does not carry over to another (e.g., SRW) — each requires its own course and exam.
