Steps
Retrieve the Recruiting API access token from Settings > API > Credentials > Recruiting API Access Token - this token is separate from the Employee/Attendance/Absence client_id/client_secret
Call the open positions endpoint to confirm the target job posting is currently published; applicants can only be submitted to postings that are live
POST the application with required system attributes, plus any custom applicant attributes found under Settings > Recruiting > Applicant > Edit Attribute > API Attribute Name
Attach resume/documents up to 20 MB per file within a 64 MB total request, using an allowed type (pdf, docx, doc, jpg, png, txt, jpeg, odt, ods, xlsx, rtf, xls, pptx, ppt, gif, tif, tiff, bmp, csv, rar, gz, zip, 7z)
For candidate/application/job retrieval beyond posting, use Personio's separate v2 Recruiting endpoints
Known gotchas
Applications submitted for a position that has since been unpublished will be rejected - re-check position status before retry
The recruiting token cannot read or write Employee/Attendance/Absence data; it is scoped to Recruiting only
Document type/size limits are enforced server-side - validate client-side first to avoid wasted requests
