Obtain the current edition of the CSIA Chimney & Venting Essentials manual and the edition of the International Residential Code (IRC) currently referenced in CSIA's exam guide
Study both domains covered by the two-part exam: a closed-book chimney/venting knowledge section based on the manual and NFPA 211, and an open-book IRC code-application section
Register for and complete both exam parts in the same testing appointment per CSIA's current testing policy
Upon passing, review CSIA's current three-year renewal cycle requirements (annual dues plus either a retest or accumulation of Continuing Education Units) so renewal deadlines are tracked from day one
Add the CCS credential and any related CSIA certifications to business licensing/insurance documentation as required by state or local authorities
