Steps

  1. Gather the link's components: total fiber length, fiber type (and its attenuation coefficient in dB/km at the relevant wavelength), number of mated connector pairs, and number of splices.
  2. Calculate fiber loss as attenuation coefficient x length using the cable spec's dB/km figure.
  3. Add connector loss: budget roughly 0.3-0.5 dB per mated connector pair unless the manufacturer's tested value is known.
  4. Add splice loss: budget roughly 0.1 dB per fusion splice (higher for mechanical splices) based on the installer's demonstrated splice performance.
  5. Sum fiber + connector + splice loss and compare the total against the applicable TIA-568.3 channel/link loss limit for the fiber category, then also check it against the specific transceiver's optical power budget for margin.
