Confirm the account is on a usage-based or Enterprise plan — API access is not available on the free tier
In the Pencil Spaces dashboard, go to Spaces Manager > Settings > API Key
Click Generate and follow the on-screen prompts to create the key
Store the key securely and use it as a Bearer token in the Authorization header (Authorization: Bearer <API KEY>) on requests to the Pencil Spaces API
Call a simple endpoint (e.g. under the 'users' or 'sites' groups in the API reference) to confirm the key works before building further
Known gotchas
Free Pencil Spaces accounts (the ones showing just 'Pencil Spaces' rather than an institution name in the dashboard) cannot access the API without upgrading
