Test total alkalinity (TA) and pH together, not in isolation, since TA acts as the buffer that resists pH change.
If both TA and pH are low, add an alkalinity increaser first in measured doses, then retest and adjust pH afterward.
If pH keeps drifting upward while TA stays stable, suspect CO2 off-gassing (common with aeration features, spa jets, or salt generators) rather than a true chemical imbalance, and manage it with more frequent small acid doses or by reducing aeration/agitation where practical.
Use muriatic acid or dry acid to lower pH and TA together, or aeration/soda ash to raise pH — choose the reagent based on which parameter also needs to move.
Retest after each adjustment and allow full circulation time before making a second correction, since TA and pH changes take time to stabilize.
Known gotchas
Soda ash raises both pH and TA — using it when TA is already at target will push TA out of range even as it corrects pH.
Salt chlorine generator pools often show chronic upward pH drift from the electrolysis process itself, requiring more frequent acid dosing than an equivalent non-salt pool — don't mistake this for a leak or dosing pump failure.
Adjusting pH without checking TA first can mask an underlying low-buffer condition that will cause the pH to swing again shortly after.
