Steps
Physically connect the iOS device and accept the Trust This Computer prompt; enable Developer Mode under Settings on iOS 16+
Locate the bundled WebDriverAgent Xcode project at <xcuitest-driver>/node_modules/appium-webdriveragent/WebDriverAgent.xcodeproj under the driver's install location (default ~/.appium)
In the WebDriverAgentRunner target's Signing & Capabilities, select your Apple Developer Team so Xcode can generate a valid provisioning profile
Pass matching xcodeOrgId/xcodeSigningId (or updatedWDABundleId) capabilities so Appium builds and signs WDA the same way at session start
If a session fails with an invalid-signature error after install, trust the developer certificate on-device under Settings > General > VPN & Device Management
Known gotchas
A free (non-paid) Apple Developer account still signs WDA successfully, but the resulting provisioning profile expires after 7 days, silently breaking a previously-working setup until it's re-signed
WDA must be re-trusted on-device any time the signing certificate or team changes, even if the WDA bundle ID itself is unchanged
iOS 16+ devices need Developer Mode explicitly toggled on in Settings before WDA can even install, separately from the usual computer-trust prompt
