Steps
Log anti-icing/pre-treatment as its own distinct service event, separate from post-storm plowing, with its own timestamp, product, and application rate.
Record the decision basis for pre-treating (forecast data reviewed, expected precipitation type and onset) to show a proactive rationale rather than an after-the-fact justification.
Photograph treated surfaces where practical before precipitation begins, alongside the application record, to establish that treatment occurred ahead of the event.
Note in the contract whether anti-icing is an included service, since seasonal agreements more commonly bundle proactive ice management while per-push agreements often do not.
Retain pre-treatment records for the same duration as other service logs so they're available if a claim alleges no proactive measures were taken.
Known gotchas
Pre-treating ahead of the wrong precipitation type (for example, brine before rain that washes it off before a freeze) can be ineffective and hard to defend if the reasoning wasn't documented.
Performing pre-treatment that isn't specified in the contract can create an implied standard of care beyond what the client is paying for — keep contract language aligned with actual practice.
