Steps
Confirm a qualified WPS exists for every joint type, position, and process planned for field welding, and that it is available at the work location for welders and inspectors to reference.
Verify each welder assigned has a current welder qualification record for the specific process/position/material combination required by the WPS.
Check welder continuity logs to confirm the welder has performed the qualified process within the applicable maximum allowable lapse period; requalify or document renewed continuity before assigning lapsed welders to that process.
Confirm the special inspector or QC coordinator has copies of both the WPS package and welder qualification/continuity records prior to daily field welding sign-off.
Maintain traceability between each welded joint, the WPS used, and the welder's stamp/ID for as-built quality records.
Known gotchas
A welder qualified on a process months ago but without documented continuity within the required interval is effectively unqualified again until continuity is re-established or requalification occurs — an old qualification card alone isn't sufficient.
Field joint conditions (position, access) sometimes differ from the shop-qualified position; confirm the WPS and welder qualification actually cover the field joint's specific position, not just the general process.
