Steps
Confirm a permit is required: any sidewalk shed, or a supported scaffold over 40 feet in height, per nyc.gov/site/buildings/property-or-business-owner/scaffold-shed-permit.page.
Verify the filer has an NYC.ID account (or existing eFiling credentials work for DOB NOW login).
File the job in DOB NOW: Build (a810-dobnow.nyc.gov), upload required documents, and pay filing fees online.
If the shed extends into the public right-of-way, submit the DOB-approved package to DOT's Office of Permit Management for the sidewalk shed permit.
After work is complete, submit a removal notification through DOB NOW to close the permit and obtain a Letter of Completion — note a TR1 Final inspection report is no longer required for this equipment type as of a November 5, 2022 DOB service notice.
Known gotchas
The 40-foot threshold applies to supported scaffolds; sidewalk sheds need a permit regardless of height.
If a supported scaffold sits atop a sidewalk shed, the height calculation must include the shed height beneath it (NYC Building Code BC 3314.1.1) — a common under-height miscalculation.
