Steps

  1. Build a complete old-URL to new-URL 301 redirect map covering every indexed URL, avoiding blanket redirects of every old URL to the new homepage
  2. Verify both the old and new domains — including all subdomains and www/non-www variants — as domain-level properties in Search Console before starting
  3. Run the Change of Address tool from the old domain-level property, selecting the new domain-level property as the destination, and resolve any failed pre-move checks it reports
  4. Submit a Change of Address request for every subdomain/variant being retired, not just the primary one, since each is evaluated independently
  5. Keep the 301 redirects live for at least 180 days (Google recommends up to a year or longer where feasible) to let signals transfer fully
  6. Monitor both properties' coverage and performance reports post-migration to confirm the new domain is picking up indexing and traffic while the old one declines as expected
