Steps
Physically clean the tank interior to remove dirt, scale, and loose material before each disinfection cycle
Disinfect using either ~50 ppm free chlorine held for 24 hours, or an elevated ~200 ppm chlorine residual held for at least 3 hours, per commonly cited state health-department tank disinfection guidance
For Texas PWS haulers specifically, disinfect the tank at least monthly (or immediately if contamination is suspected) per 30 TAC 290.44(i)(2)(I) and maintain the required in-tank chlorine residual at all times water is being hauled
Flush the disinfectant solution completely before returning the tank to service, and verify residual chlorine in delivered water lands in the safe finished-water range rather than the shock-disinfection range
