Steps
POST to /v2/insurances with 'tracking_code', 'carrier', 'amount', 'currency', and 'to_address' / 'from_address' to insure any parcel regardless of which carrier or platform generated the label
Store the returned insurance object id and policy_id; the insurance policy is effective immediately upon creation
Monitor the insurance status; EasyPost updates insurance status to 'voided' for successfully delivered packages and 'purchased' during transit
To file a claim, contact EasyPost support with the insurance object id, documentation of the loss or damage (photos, carrier loss notice), and the purchase receipt
EasyPost's insurance covers up to the declared amount; ensure declared amount reflects actual merchandise value — undervaluing results in proportional claim payout
Known gotchas
EasyPost insurance can be purchased for shipments created outside EasyPost (e.g., labels from carrier portals); the tracking_code and carrier fields identify the shipment
Insurance claims require documentation — carrier damage notices, photos, and receipts; collect this evidence immediately as claim filing windows are time-limited
USPS shipments have special coverage rules; EasyPost's insurance supplements rather than replaces USPS built-in coverage for services that include it
