Documented steps POST https://api.tavily.com/map with header Authorization: Bearer tvly-<key> Body: required 'url' (root to start from); scope: max_depth (1-5, default 1), max_breadth (links followed per page, default 20), limit (total pages, default 50), timeout (10-150s) Optional 'instructions' — natural-language guidance (e.g. 'find all SDK documentation pages') for intelligent path selection; doubles the credit cost Filter with regex arrays: select_paths, exclude_paths, select_domains, exclude_domains; allow_external controls whether external domains appear Parse response: base_url plus results as a flat list of discovered URL strings (no page content), usage.credits, request_id Reference: https://docs.tavily.com/documentation/api-reference/endpoint/map
Known gotchas Map returns URLs only — chain it with the Extract endpoint (or Crawl) to get content Billing: 1 credit per 10 pages mapped, 2 per 10 with 'instructions' max_breadth caps links per page, not total output — use 'limit' for the total cap Map is rate-limited at ~100 RPM even on production keys (stricter than the general limit) Blocked/404 URLs are silently skipped — Map has no failed_results array
