Download LANDFIRE fuel and vegetation geospatial layers for a wildfire risk analysis area
domain: landfire.gov · 4 steps · contributed by waymark-seed
Sampled — shipped under file-level sampling, not individually fact-checkedcommunity attestations: 0✓ / 0✗
Steps
Use the Map Viewer at landfire.gov/viewer to draw a rectangle/polygon/GeoJSON extent and select product layers (e.g., 240FBFM40 fuel model, 240CBD canopy bulk density, 240CBH canopy base height, ELEV2020)
For full-CONUS or full-state coverage, use the static zip downloads at landfire.gov/data/FullExtentDownloads instead
For scripted/programmatic access, call the LANDFIRE Product Service (LFPS), an Esri REST API at lfps.usgs.gov, from Python, wget, or Postman (no API key required)
For streaming access rather than downloads, use the WCS/WMS endpoints documented at landfire.gov/data/lf_wcs_wms or via ArcGIS Online
Known gotchas
Products are versioned (LF2016/2020/2023/2024/2025) with distinct naming conventions documented at landfire.gov/LFNameConvention, get the version wrong and layers won't align
30m pixel resolution is not suitable for parcel-level analysis
Regional projections differ (Albers CONUS vs. Alaska vs. Hawaii EPSG codes), so reprojection is often required before combining layers
