Steps
Sign in with (or create) a USPTO.gov account, which is required for Open Data Portal access
Generate an ODP API key from your account dashboard
Send a request to the Patent File Wrapper Search API with query parameters such as application number, publication number, or other supported search filters
Paginate through results using the API's offset/limit parameters for large result sets
Use the companion Application Data and Documents APIs to pull bibliographic metadata and file-wrapper documents for applications returned by the search
Update any existing PatentsView PatentSearch API integration code to the new ODP endpoint paths and response schema
Known gotchas
The standalone PatentsView PatentSearch API was migrated onto the USPTO Open Data Portal, so legacy PatentsView API endpoints and documentation are being phased out — integrations should point at the current ODP endpoints, not the old PatentsView API host
As of mid-2026, ODP requires signing in with a USPTO.gov account to obtain an API key — anonymous or keyless access is no longer available
The ODP response schema and field names differ from the legacy PatentsView API, so field-mapping code written against the old API needs to be rewritten rather than simply repointed at a new URL
